2. Flora

English ivy (hedera helix) is native to Europe and western Asia. Like many species considered “invasive” in parts of the United States, English ivy readily escapes cultivation, spreads, and causes structural and ecological damage. It is a plant with great cultural and historical significance throughout Europe as well as the United States.

Roses were first cultivated in China as early as 3000 BCE, with Confuscian records of the flower in the Imperial Palace in 500 BCE. Rose breeding in Europe gained popularity in the 1800s when Rosa chinensis (China roses) were exported to Europe. Many of today’s garden rose varieties descend from Rosa chinensis species.

3. Fauna

In European and Chinese cultures, pigs and boars have significant symbolism. The character for family (家, jiā) in Chinese is a pig radical (豕) combined under a household radical (宀)—literally a pictograph to mean that a pig under a roof makes a home. The pig’s head is a staple at Chinese ancestral workshop meals and is usually considered the cut of honor. It is tied in with the annual peasant dietary cycle: Chinese peasants rear a piglet from the start of the year, slaughters it around the lunar new year, sells the pork at market, and with the income buys a new piglet and some port for new year’s dumplings.

The pig’s head in Drive Out the Pig was sourced from a farm in Pennsylvania and then was later donated to W&L’s Anthropology Department for their educational comparative zooarchaeology collection. It was buried on back campus, with the plan to excavate the remains for comparative bone studies in 2024–2025.

4. How to play Drive Out the Pig

How to play Drive Out the Pig:

4 players, 52 card deck

  1. Deal out entire deck, 13 cards per player.
  2. Player with the 2 of clubs leads the first trick with the 2 of clubs.
  3. Each trick, players play one card per person. Players must follow suit if possible. If the player does not have a card of the lead suit, they may play any card. The player who plays the highest card of each trick in the lead suit takes the cards of the trick and starts the next trick. The goal is to take or avoid tricks, depending on the cards played.
  4. Round ends when all cards are played (13 tricks). Score as follows.
  5. Repeat steps 1–4, and end game when a player reaches -1000 points.

Scoring:

  • Pig (Queen of spades) = -100
  • Goat (Jack of diamonds) = +100
  • 10 of clubs = x2 multiplier
  • Heart cards = -10 each
