Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) is native to East Asia, including many areas of China. It is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a large number of ailments. Its history of medicinal and culinary uses in China goes back thousands of years.

Japanese honeysuckle was introduced to the U.S. from Japan in 1806 as ornamental cover, to control soil erosion, and to provide wildlife forage; however, it easily overtakes other plants and has spread in the wild to over 26 states in the eastern U.S.
