1. Ceramics

The bowls in I’m Gonna Live Forever use a type of glaze developed from Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) imperial kiln experiments called chicken fat yellow, 雞油黃 (jī yóu huáng). Unlike many of the ceramics in LONG TIME NO SEE, these bowls were likely made for a domestic audience and not for export.

2. Flora

Having long been cultivated in East Asia, Chinese chestnut trees (Castanea mollissima) were first introduced to Maryland by Gerow D. Brill in 1900 as a smaller alternative to the native American chestnut tree. Due to a fungus that was concurrently introduced during the active importation program of non-native Chinese chestnut trees and Japanese chestnut trees (Castanea crenata, which were introduced earlier in the late 1800s), the American chestnut tree is now critically endangered. The non-native species of chestnuts were comparatively resistant to the fungus and now account for the majority of chestnut trees in the U.S.
